Yuba City was founded along with several other towns in the area in 1849, during the gold rush in California.Even though Yuba City remained a small town for quite a few years it has been the county seat of Sutter County since 1856.Yuba City was not officially incorporated until 1908 and experienced its first big population boom after World War II.Yuba City is located 40 miles north of Sacramento and is home to the Sutter Buttes mountain range, the smallest mountain range in the world. Yuba City has a number of annual activities.It is home to one of the largest Sikh populations in the United States or anywhere outside of Punjab India.Every year on the first Sunday in November Yuba City hosts a parade and celebration that commemorates the receipt by Sikhs of their Holy Scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, in 1708.This is considered one of the largest gatherings in Northern California where in 2012 approximately 150,000 participants showed up to celebrate.Every year Yuba City has a children’s 4th of July parade followed by musical performances and a bicycle rodeo put on by the police department.Since 2009 Yuba City has been hosting a yearly beer and wine festival in October at the Town Center.
Beyond the annual activities to keep residents active,Yuba City also has 3 community parks including an aquatic complex with a lap pool, beach entry play pool, water slide and also 15 neighborhood parks.The parks and recreation division also has a variety of activities that residents of all ages can sign-up for year round.The city puts a special effort into providing activities for youth and senior citizens.In the foothills surrounding Yuba City top-notch olive oil is produced and there are also a handful of wineries.Residents of Yuba City enjoy lots of fresh produce grown by area farmers.Here you are able to get your produce straight from the farm.The main shopping in Yuba City is found on Plumas Street and residents enjoy a variety of foods from local and chain restaurants throughout town.

Plums are one of the main fruits dried at Sunsweet giving Yuba City the nickname – Prune Capital of the World.Sunsweet is the fourth largest employer in Yuba City proceeded by Sutter County, Yuba City Unified School District, andFremont-Rideout Health Group is the largest employer with almost 2,000 employees.Retail and healthcare make up the largest sectors of the economy in Yuba City.Farming is also an important part of the local economy, which includes the surrounding towns where many large orchards and farms exist.
